Tihar Jail boundary wall height to go up

In order to enhance the security at the Asia’s largest prison Tihar Jail, the prison authorities have decided to raise the height of the boundary walls of the prison. The move has come after mobile phones, SIM cards, surgical blades and drugs were found inside the prisons. These items were thrown inside the prisons through the boundary wall.

Sources at the prison claimed that restricted items were found on the premises of jail number one, eight and nine which are close to the boundary walls of the jail. Articles like tennis balls, socks and small packets were found lying in the compound of the jail. A closer examination of these confirmed the intention behind the act. Mobile phone parts, SIM cards, blades and tobacco were found hidden inside such items and then sealed from above.

Jail number one houses many VIP inmates, including Sahara chief Subroto Roy. Jail numbers eight and nine have their boundary close to the Jail Road. The areas where the banned items were found are those where inmates are allowed to move during their routine intervals. Initially the height of the boundary walls will be raised by four to five feet to restrain the throwing of such items inside the jail. The work is being carried out by the PWD officials.

“Some way or the other, notorious elements disrupt the peaceful life of the inmates. If raising the boundary walls doesn’t help, we are also planning to put high nets to increase the security of the jail,” said an official at the Prison.

Following this, the superintendents of these three jails have been ordered to closely supervise the work of raising the boundary walls. Smuggling these banned items through the gate is almost impossible as there is a multi-layered checking at the gates of every jail.

To further enhance the vigil on the inmates, the number of CCTV cameras will also soon be doubled in Tihar. “Currently there are around 500 CCTV cameras installed and we are planning to raise the total number up to 1000 plus at least to further tighten the vigilance,” the official added.
