Tihar inmate caught with charas packets while being frisked at entrance

In yet another incident highlighting security lapse inside Asia's largest jail, an inmate was allegedly caught with two packets of charas while he was being frisked at the entrance of the Tihar Jail on Monday morning. Post this incident, police said they have registered a case under NDPS Act at the Hari Nagar police station on the complaint of the jail authorities. Police said the inmate identified as Kundan Singh, kept in ward number 2 of Jail number 2, was coming back from a local court when security staff posted at the gate on physically checking Singh found two packets each of 25 grams and 30 grams of charas respectively, hidden in his cavity.

Confirming the case, Sudhir Yadav, Director General of Tihar Prisons told The Pioneer police are  investigating the matter.  According to a senior jail official, this is not first incident as prohibited items like small quantities of drugs, mobile phones have been found couple of times from the possession of the prisoners. Multiple factors such as large movement of vehicles to and from the jail, regular acts where items are thrown from outside the jail and in cases where metal detectors are not able to identify these prohibited items, access to prohibited items becomes easy for these prisoners who, suffering from depression, indulge in taking these items.
