Claiming not to have received his pension money for a few months, a 70-year-old retired MTNl employee was found to be living in a dilapidated conditions with his daughter-in-law and her 20-year-old daughter in the national Capital. Found to be lying on the same cot for nearly four years, a 45-year-old woman along with her 20-year-old daughter were found to be living in a malnourished condition at their dilapidated room in Southwest Delhi’s Dabri area on Wednesday evening, police said.

The incident came to light on Wednesday evening at around 6.35pm at the Mahavir Enclave 2 area of Dabri when a neighbor made a call to the Police Control Room alleging that a foul smell is emanating from a house in the area.

When a team of the Dabri police station forcefully opened the door of the room, they found that Deepa (20) and Kalawati (45) were found to be lying together in a cot.

At the time of the incident, a senior police officer said that they found that apart from these two women who were found to be in a malnourished state, Kalawati’s father-in-law, Mahavir Mishra, a retired MTNl employee was also present inside the house.

“Four years back, Kalawati’s husband, Tej Bahadur had expired due to some natural causes. Since then, Kalawati and her daughter Deepa had been living aloof and kept to themselves in their room. After the death of Tej Bahadur, these two women were depressed. Moreover, their condition began to deteriorate when the pension of the sole bread winner of the family, 70-year-old Mahavir Mishra stopped coming in for the past few months. Mahavir Mishra, who had worked with the MTNl as a line man used to receive `18,000 as the pension money. However, in the absence of this amount of money, Mahavir was not able to provide food and medicines to his daughter-in-law Kalawati and her grand-daughter, Deepa.

“Since both the women were allegedly depressed, in the absence of food and medicines, their health deteroriated and they started keeping themselves in a single room and shared one cot.

A senior police official said that the two women have been sent to the Deen Dayal Upadhyay hospital where they are undergoing treatment.  Meanwhile, in a statement to the police, Vinod, an 18-year-old son of Kalawati said that in the absence of a strong financial system at home, he left home after his father’s death and started living in Janakpuri area of West Delhi where he used to stay in a temple and work as a priest.
