Thousands of people gathered at Batla House graveyard on Sunday to pay their last respect to the slain Deputy Superintendent of Police Mohammad Tanzil Ahmad of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) who was shot dead by unidentified bike-borne assailants on Sunday post midnight in Bijnor, Uttar Pradesh, as he was returning after attending a wedding.
His wife was seriously injured. The slain officer’s body was brought to Abul Fazal Encalve in Okhla on Sunday evening where he has been living for the last fifteen years or so, according to residents.
It was only after heavily armed police personnel and media persons arrived in the area since morning that many people came to know that Tanzil resided in Jamia Nagar, said residents.
Additional deployment was made in and around the house of the NIA officer to ensure that trouble mongers were kept at bay, an official said. Also, Delhi Police’s Special Cell has been asked to investigate the murder of the officer who was involved in the investigations of some sensitive cases.
Tanzil was given a Guard of Honour by the BSF jawans before his body was laid to rest at a graveyard in the Jamia area.
Before the Honour, however, Tanzil’s body was surrounded by agitated locals who shouted slogans. They were agitated because no senior Government representatives were present during the last rites of the NIA officer.
After the locals were calmed down by the officers present at the scene, last rites were allowed to be conducted.
Meanwhile, a senior NIA official who had come to Tanzil’s residence said the attack on the officer was a planned one and the agency is probing all possible angles and will send its findings to the Uttar Pradesh Police that is investigating the grisly murder.
