This Holi, don't risk your health

Enjoy Holi to the fullest but don't overlook health hazards, say doctors urging caution in the choice of colours. Medicos have warned of the risks of skin rashes, teary eyes and dry hair post from the use of synthetic and chemically-extracted colours and suggest the use of home-made ones.

Mukeh Giridhar, dermatologist, Max Healthcare stressed on ample and proper application of moisturizers and hair oils before playing with colours. He has said that the human skin is impacted in a number of ways by the various colours. Green and purple particularly have harmful ingredients, he says.

"Holi is a summer festival and the harm is just double in the sun. People must apply a combination of moisturising cream with high SPF (sun protection factor) sunscreen to before going out. It serves as a shield on skin and does not expose it to harmful radiations. It will also prove as a base and protective coating between skin and colors," said Giridhar.

He also suggested the use of copious amounts of oil on the hair and petroleum jelly on the nails. "The oil forms a coat over the hair and helps in removing colour easily with a shampoo. Avoid using petrol and spirits to remove stains, it only dries skin further. If irritation persists by any colour remove it immediately with water and body lotion and apply a cold cream or a moisturizer quickly," added Giridhar.

Sanjay Dhawan, director, Ophthalmology at Fortis Hospital said immediate steps must be taken in case colours get into eyes. "Splash your eyes with a lot of tap water. If there is loss of vision or corneal abrasions, consult your eye specialist immediately," said Dhawan.
