A group of Delhi IIT students have invented a device named ‘Safer’ to provide security to metropolitan women. The students unveiled the unique pendant-like device on Tuesday. The innovation was selected from top 10 projects. These projects have been shortlisted amongst the 67 entries received from seven IITs across the country.
‘Safer’ is a standalone personalised human security device. It will use all modes of communication like the Internet, SMS or near field to alert a relative or friend during emergency. Safer will use multiple cellular phone towers to transmit data and triangulate the victim’s position.
“Safer device is like a pendent, an ornament, which can be easily worn by women without drawing unwarranted attention. With the concept of cloud computing and data sharing, this device can be used in emergency,” said Paras Batra of IIT Delhi. It is user-friendly, the bearer of the device just needs to press that pendant twice. The location record and an alert SMS will be sent to his/her dearest ones, the innovator further added.
Safer is available in the market on pre-order basis and is priced at Rs3,500. There were other innovative projects, which were also showcased, namely Smart Ward — Automating Patient Monitoring System in hospital wards, Advanced Breathalyzer Helmet,Smart Earphones and Education Data Analytics.
