In a fatal accident, a 27-year- old driver of a Traveller Tempo ferrying schoolchildren died while he was trying to apply the brakes of the vehicle from hitting a bike.
The accident took place near a pillar of a metro station on the main road in Ranjit Nagar area of Central Delhi’s Patel Nagar area at 11.30 am on Monday morning.
According to a senior police official, the deceased driver has been identified as Sonu. Police said the incident took place when Sonu was ferrying schoolchildren of the Faith Academy school, located on the Tank Road. Police said the accident, in which more than a dozen schoolchildren sustained minor injuries was stuck in the traffic jam near one of the metro pillars of Patel Nagar metro station for a long time.
“When the signal turned green, Sonu drove his vehicle ahead. But an over-speeding bike overtook the tempo traveller and in order to avoid the collision, Sonu drove the vehicle over the footpath,” said the officer.
Eyewitnesses told cops that the impact of the collision was such that Sonu plunged out of the front window. The investigating official said Sonu suffered severe brain injuries and was found to be bleeding profusely.
Police said after the accident, more than a dozen school children started shouting and crying for help. Some of the locals present near the spot forced open the door of the tempo to save the children stuck in the vehicle.
