The Delhi Police on Saturday evening rescued a 17-year-old girl — allegedly confined to her own house in a room filled with filth and rotten garbage by her “abusive” mother — from a flat in B-block of Pandav Nagar in East Delhi.
Police said the incident came to light on Saturday evening when a local property dealer heard someone crying above his office. On hearing the loud cries of a girl, the property dealer stopped 44-year-old Krishna Ghosh, who used to visit frequently to the room above his office and asked her if she knew anything about what is happening. Refusing to divulge anything, the woman walked-off. Following which, the property dealer informed the Mandawali police station.
A beat Head Constable was deputed and frequented the area in the past week and on Saturday evening finally found out that Pihu Ghosh alleged to be mentally unstable had been living in a dimly lit room for the past two years. Police said the girl appears to be mentally unstable as well as physically malnourished.
“The girl’s mother claimed that she used to feed her daughter once a day while she was living at a separate flat with her 22-year-old daughter. On being questioned, Pihu’s mother, Krishna Ghosh claimed that she is depressed and has been alone in the room on her own accord.
Ravindra Yadav, Joint Commissioner of Police, Eastern Range, said, “The girl was found to be living in a room filled with garbage. Her condition was found to be bad. After her rescue, the girl was taken to the lal Bahadur Shastri hospital where doctors checked her and said her blood pressure was low.”
The senior police official said, “As per the version of the girl’s mother, she lives in another rented flat with her 22-year-old daughter. The woman had filed a divorce and maintenance case against her husband in 2011 in the Karkardooma court.”
Meanwhile, Pihu told police that she had locked herself in the flat and did not leave the room on her own will for the past three months.
“Our police team counselled the girl. We will produce her before the Children Welfare Committee (CWC) and based on their enquiry, further action will be taken as per the directions of the CWC,” said Yadav.
Police, meanwhile, said they have questioned the parents of the girl separately to find out what truly led the girl to remain locked and live in filthy conditions.
Further investigation is on.
