In what could be termed as a marital discord, a 32-year-old software engineer allegedly committed suicide here by hanging himself after critically injuring his wife on Sunday morning.
The deceased — Amit Bachchan — hit his wife Shivani, who works in a company in Gurgaon, on her head with a sharp object. Before attacking his wife, Bachchan also locked his mother in a room of their flat at Platinum Heights apartment in Dwarka in South-West Delhi around 4.30 am on Sunday. A PCR was later made by the building security guard at 5 am after he heard shrieks of Shivani.
Police found Shivani locked in a room with multiple injuries all over her body and her mother-in-law, Chandrakanta (58) in another room. She was rushed to a local hospital for treatment and her condition remains critical, said a police official of South-West district. Amit’s shell-shocked mother told police that the couple had been married for just two months. Even the neighbours informed about frequent quarrels between the two.
Additional DCP (South-West) Chinmoy Biswal said a police team reached the spot and found the eighth floor apartment bolted from inside. “We had to enter the house from a neighbour’s balcony and found Shivani locked in her bedroom, injured. She could not make a phone call because her mobile was getting charged in the drawing room. She had also thrown a flower pot from the window of her room to garner attention but it went unnoticed. later, her screams were heard by a security guard who made a PCR call,” said Biswal.
Chandrakanta’s room was also found locked from inside while Amit’s body was lying on the floor with a TV cable wrapped around his neck. Amit hanged himself from the ceiling fan using the cable, which later broke and the body fell down, Biswal said.“We have not recovered any suicide note from the spot. There are no signs of forced entry in the house and prima facie, it seems that Amit tried to kill his wife and then committed suicide. Shivani, who is out of danger now, has told us that she was sleeping in another room when Amit attacked her,” said Biswal.
Amit had returned home on Saturday night after a party and an argument had broken out soon after, police said. Police is investigating the case under section 174 CrPc and looking into other angles as well. Crime and forensic teams have picked circumstantial evidence from the spot. The body has been sent for post-mortem, police said.
