The Delhi University will begin the training classes for teachers nominated by various colleges to teach the 11 Foundation Courses of the Four-Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUP) from May 20.
The lists from colleges have been received by the university and every batch has been divided into 25-30 teachers who will go through training on effective and active teaching methods. The orientation of the first batch, which is of Mathematics will be adresssed by the Vice-Principal Dinesh Singh himself at the university’s Cluster Innovation Centre (CIC).
The 11 Foundation Courses are language, literature and Creativity-I and II, Information Technology, Business, Entrepreneurship, and Management, Governence and Citizenship, Psychology, Communication and life Skills, Geographic and Socio-Economic Diversity, Science and life, History, Culture and Civilisation, Building Mathematical Ability and Environment and Publich Health. It is mandatory for students of all courses to opt for these 11 compulsory courses under the FYUP for which the syllabus was designed by a committee consisting of experts from outside and inside the university.
Each batch will have to undergo a three-day session of training at the CIC and Centre for Professional Development in Higher Education. “We had asked the colleges to give four nominees of teachers apt for teaching the Foundational Courses. Some of them have given out eight names after which we have more than 200 members for each course. We have stopped with around 200 and a decision has been taken that only 25 to 30 teachers will go through the training at a time because it will be individual centric also,” said an official from the university.
He said the maximum number of nominees have come from the Commerce teachers as there are around 50 colleges having a course in the stream and any teacher fufilling the demands of the courses syllabi would be considered. “Each course will be taught by teachers from a specific discipline and it will vary on the requirements of the course syllabi. For example a teacher from Commerce background could also teach sections of IT, Mathematics and Management courses,” he added.
The training will focus on the changes in the pedagogy of teachers by instilling more effective, practical and active classroom teaching. “There was an empowered committee who went through session after session over the building of the new course and the training will be conducted by the same people. Some of them are good oraters, mathematicians, researchers, experienced and educationists. The VC will start the prospective building and others will take over. It will be over latest by July 20, two or three days before the classes for the new session begin,” the official said.
Meanwhile, Delhi University on Wednesday formed a monitoring committee for the Four-Year Undergraduate Programme to keep a track of the activities related to it. It will be chaired by Vice Chancellor Dinesh Singh himself. The members of the committee will look after the process of admissions, implementation of the courses, clasess and colleges and report the details bit by bit to the VC,” said a official of the university.
