Tata discom adopts GPS tech to map its underground cables

Published on:

Tata Power Delhi Distribution (Tata Power-DDl) has implemented 'GPS Mapping Technology' to map its underground cables along with RFID (Radio-frequency Identification Detector). With the facility, it has become the first utility in the country to implement such technologies.

The power giant has presently carried out mapping of approx 1200 cable routes and installation of 1000 RFID markers in the first phase and is planning to expand it to the entire remaining cable routes in a phased manner.

A senior official said that the technology is aimed to identify the route of underground power cable network at any desired location as well as to fetch the details of any joints through RFID detectors over and above the ground level. “It will help to provide speedier resolutions in case any fault develops in the underground cables,” he said.

Speaking on the initiative Praveer Sinha, CEO and MD of Tata Power-DDl said, “At Tata Power-DDl, we continuously innovate and strive to introduce new technological initiatives to provide world class services to our consumers. I am sure, the GPS mapping technology in along with RFID marker installation on splices will not only ensure to trace accurate cable route & its fault location but will also help in speedier resolution to any issues related to underground power cables to improve upon reliability.”

Since the implementation of the technology, Tata Power-DDl has managed to locate and fix major and minor underground cable faults (around 1000 Nos. of 66, 33 and 11KV cable faults per annum) in accurate and speedier way resulting in less downtime in its area of operation. We have reduced the effective time to locate the cable fault from Average 90 Min to avg. 45 Min after applying this technology, he said.
