A Ghaziabad institute debarred 11 Kashmiri and non-Kashmiri students from the hostel who were found involved in ragging on Wednesday. The chairman of the HRIT Group of Institutions, Anil Agarwal, said after Tuesday’s incident, a 12-member committee consisting of two Kashmiris, two non-Kashmiri students and eight faculties proposed to debar 11 students from the institute’s hostel. The students who have been expelled from the hostel include three Kashmiri students and eight non-Kashmiri students.

In addition to this punitive measure, the institute has decided to install CCTV cameras at strategic positions on each floor. Accommodation for one faculty on each floor has been provided to control any untoward incident.

“In addition to these precautionary measures, the institute has sought an undertaking from the parents of erring students. Kashmiri students have been advised to carry on their studies without any fear since the Union Government has provided them free education, including tuition and accommodation fees,” said the chairman.A 22-year-old Kashmiri student of a private engineering institute in Ghaziabad was beaten allegedly by his seniors on Tuesday after he slipped and fell in the hostel bathroom and screamed for help.

Police said after the incident, other Kashmiri students of HR Institute of Technology in Moradnagar held a protest, forcing the administration to constitute a 12-member committee to probe the matter.“Exams were going on at the institute. The senior students reportedly assaulted the Kashmiri student because they thought he was trying to disturb them,” Ghaziabad Senior Superintendent of Police Sachi Ghildiyal said.

Senior officers said the accused were IInd and IIIrd year students of BTech. “The scale of the protest suggests that the institute management may have been trying to hush up such incidents and deal with them internally,” Ghildiyal said, adding, “Both parties refused to give a complaint saying it would affect the careers of the students. Instead, the management has decided to increase security in the hostels,” she said.
