To provide better healthcare to heart patients, the Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery Department of Govind Ballabh Pant Hospital is all set to start a homograft cardiac valve bank, which will also increase the lifespan of patients by 20-25 years.
Along with this, four operation theatres (OTs) with 36-bed ICU and 12-bed paediatric ICU would offer succour to cardiac patients. “Having completed 50 years in cardiac surgery, the department’s homograft valve bank will give new life to heart patients from April 30,” said Dr DK Satsangi, Professor and Head of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery. He added that GB Pant is the first State Government-run hospital to start a valve bank.
Valves being the natural creation are perfect for all blood groups. These valves are very expensive and in India and it will be a relief to those who cannot spend lakhs on treatment, said Dr Satsangi. The other facilities include heart transplant, artificial heart transplant, endovascular surgery, minimally invasive open heart procedure and video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery.
The hospital conducts over 600 operations in paediatric cardiac surgery every year and is now planning to develop a fully-dedicated paediatric unit with a 12-bed ICU and separate OTs, which will cater only to paediatric cardiology. “Children also suffer from heart disease but due to lack of proper treatment and a long-winded waiting list, they’re often forced to wait 3-4 years before being treated. The advanced paediatric unit will help parents get their child treated on time,” said Dr Satsangi.
