T-cams to slam brakes on speed devils

Published on:

Installation of speed cameras across the city to keep a check on errant drivers was part of the Commonwealth Games 2010 project, which has faced inordinate delays.

The speed limit for private vehicles is 60 kph-70 kph on most stretches, while commercial vehicles have a prescribed speed limit of 40 kph. A senior traffic police official informed that the offenders can be booked under dangerous driving if caught driving 20 kph higher than the permitted speed limit. Dangerous driving comes under the ambit of Section 184 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. Under this, the extent of punishment is decided in court. It could go up to Rs 1,000 in fine or a maximum jail term of six months, or both.
