An undeveloped Sunwar Sarai village in Sambhal district has been a happy hunting ground for the Delhi police Operations Cell in New Delhi district. On earlier occasions too, police had not only arrested auto-lifters, but also recovered stolen vehicles from the village.
Friday was no exception as a team of the Delhi Police was acting on a tip-off, the team rounded up Khushi Pal Yadav as a suspect. Yadav’s sudden death, while being brought to Delhi in a police vehicle, has once again brought the special staff into focus after the infamous episode of Constable Arvind Dabas trying to access the Call Detail Record (CDR) of senior BJP leader Arun Jaitley in January, this year.
On April 11 this year, the special staff of New Delhi district had arrested two auto lifters — Kanwar Pal Singh and Kanhya lal, both natives of Sunwar Sarai village — and recovered four motorbikes from their possession. later, police arrested three more people, including a receiver and recovered other stolen vehicles from their possession. “The investigators had found that every person in Sunwar Sarai village was using stolen vehicle and most of the time, the motorbike was stolen from the Capital or Ghaziabad,” police sources said, adding that they had informed their senior officials about the matter too.
After sustained interrogation of accused people, they conducted a raid and arrested two men. They had also recovered eight stolen motorbikes from their possession. Police sources said that the investigators were working on their channel for the past few months and they received a tip-off about the auto-lifter on Wednesday evening.
The unfortunate incident had also brought the role of Inspector in-charge of Special Staff (New Delhi district) Jarnail Singh into focus. He is facing a departmental enquiry (DE) for having allowed digging of illegal borewells, while he was posted as the Station House Officer of Mehrauli Police station. He was initially posted with the District Investigation Unit (DIU) of New Delhi district, but was later posted as the inspector-in charge of the special staff. There is a practice in the Delhi Police to send police personnel to non-sensitive units after any disciplinary action is initiated against them. In case of Jarnail Singh, the laid down rule was given a short shrift, sources said.
Meanwhile, the Delhi Police has started an inquiry to ascertain the facts as to what led to the death of suspect Khushi Pal Yadav.
