Summer takes a rain check

Summer takes a rain check

With intermittent rains still occurring in the national Capital keeping day temperatures below normal, the Met Department has said that summer has been delayed by over 20 days this time. While light rains and thunderstorms continued on Tuesday, the weatherman has predicted light rains on Monday due to the retreating western disturbance.

“Impact of winters is still over the city. The western disturbance forced rains and colder winds which are also causing thunderstorms. Summer season as per IMD officially starts from March 1 and ends on May 31 each year. But, this time it is delayed due to extra-tropical mid-latitude winds coming from Mediterranean or far North Atlantic systems,” said Rajender Jenamani. Since temperatures are likely to remain below average till March 18, winters can be expected only beyond that. Average temperatures for declaring summers should be between 30°C-32°C.

The next WD may affect north India hills March 17-18, when Delhi may have some clouding with less possibilities of rain. “Delhi Airport may continue to experience colder or near normal maximum temperature which may not cross 28°C,” added Jenamani.

The Capital saw light, sporadic rain and a partly cloudy sky on Tuesday. The rain gauge recorded a total of 0.6 mm of rainfall from 8.30 am to 5.20 pm. The day was pleasant and the maximum temperature settled two notches below the season’s average at 26.8°C while the minimum was a notch above the season’s average at 15.2°C.

Delhiites may witness light rains on Wednesday. “Some parts of the city may get one or two spells of light rain till noon tomorrow. The sky will remain partly cloudy through the day,” said an official of the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

The maximum and minimum temperatures are expected to hover around 27°C and 14°C.

Monday was a rainy day with a maximum temperature at 23.2°C, five notches below the season’s average, while the minimum was 15.6°C, two notches above the season’s average.
