Among heinous crimes, a three per cent decrease in murder cases may be something to cheer about but a steep 33.49 per cent rise in attempt to murders have taken the sheen out of the law and order situation in the capital. The statistics of Delhi Police suggest that the maximum murder were the result of sudden provocation that was beyond the control of Delhi police. The statistics revealed that 21 per cent murder were committed due to the sudden provocation, while 16 per cent were committed due to the personal enmity.

According to official figures, murder cases have come down to 487 last year in comparison to 2012’s figure of 504 but the attempt to murder cases have risen to 557 from 418. Delhi’ites last year murdered people for reasons as trivial as argument over street dogs, buying curd, crying of infant, beating drums, playing cricket and consuming liquor. “Eleven per cent murders were committed due sex related matters, while 11.70 per cent committed due to the disputes over property or money matter,” police officer said, adding that 10 percent were due to the differences amongst family members and only 8 percent of the murder cases registered last year were crime related.

However, Delhi Police chief B S Bassi chose to see the silver lining in these cases after claiming that the investigators have improved their record in solving murder and attempt to murder cases. According to Bassi, policemen solved 76.18 percent of murder cases last year and also solved 90.50 percent cases of attempt to murder. “Murders per lakh of population have shown a significant decrease during the last twelve years. While the figure was 3.95 in 2001, it has come down to 2.92 last year,” he added.
