A Delhi Police Sub-Inspector (SI) allegedly committed suicide by shooting himself with his service weapon at the security unit of Vinay Marg in the wee hours of Wednesday.
SI Kaptan Singh (57) was posted with the security unit for past two years and was depressed over family issues. A police official of the New Delhi district said that no suicide note was recovered from the spot. The body has been handed over to his family after a post-mortem examination.
The Investigating Officer (IO) spoke to the family and colleagues of Kaptan Singh to ascertain as to why he took the drastic step. Initial investigations revealed that the SI was disturbed over some family issue. Singh lived at Budhha Vihar in the Outer Delhi area with his family. One of his two sons, identified as Ankush Dabas, is posted with the Delhi Police, while the other, Navin Dabas, runs his own business.
Singh was on duty when he committed suicide. His colleagues heard a bullet being fired and they ran towards the spot only to find the SI lying in a pool of blood. They rushed him to Dr Ram Manohar lohia Hospital but doctors declared him dead soon after he was shifted to the emergency wing in a comatose condition.
later, the IO recovered the empty bullet shell from the spot. “It appears to be a case of suicide and we are recording the statements of the family members as well as those posted at the security unit. The inquest proceedings are on,” police said.
