Students protesting delay in scholarships manhandled by JNU security guards: ABVP

The Akhil Bharatiya Vidhyarthi Parishad (ABVP) on Monday alleged that their president along with a visually-impaired student was injured on Monday  after security guards at the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) roughed them up for protesting on campus.

The members of ABVP said that they have submitted five complaints with the police after the incident. “The complaints were given by Chirag Dhankar, Nishant Vidhyarthi, Raj, Govind Dangi and Abhishek Kumar just after the incident,” said an ABVP member. The students had staged a protest seeking the release of fellowship which they claimed  has not come in  over a year.

Around a dozen students have been hurt in the assault, the Right-wing group said.

“Today students ‘gheraoed’ the administration office regarding the release of fellowships and scholarships. Students said that the university administration has been ignoring their demands for the release of fellowships and scholarships for a long time,” JNU’s Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad president Rohit Kumar said.

“The JNU administration carried out a violent attack on the students to suppress the scholarship scam. The students were badly beaten up by the security staff ordered by the administration,” he added.

As many as 12 students, including four female students, suffered injuries and are under treatment, said ABVP activist Ambuj.

Meanwhile, police said that so far no complaint has been received in this connection and necessary legal action will be taken if the matter is reported to the police.
