Thousands of students and teachers held a candlelight march in and around Delhi University’s North Campus on Monday, to mark the completion of one year of the horrendous incident of gang-rape of a 23-year-old student that jolted the nation.

Remembering the gang-rape victim who succumbed to grave injuries in a Singapore hospital ten days after the incident, students from various departments of DU along with professors and AAP’s winning candidate from Timarpur Harish Khanna, marched from the Vishwavidyalaya Metro station concluding it at the Kingsway Camp after passing through Faculty of Arts, law, Miranda House and nearby areas.

“It is a symbolic march to remember the atrocity committed to a young girl and her family. It is to remind the Government of the need to act tough against criminals and spread awareness among people to put an end to crime,” said Khanna, who is also Secretary of Delhi University Teachers’ Association (DUTA).

“What happened on this day last year, did not affect just Nirbhaya, but all of us who want this crime to end. We want to take this message and reiterate that we will not tolerate disrespect and inhumane behaviour towards women. We pray for Nirbhaya’s soul to rest in peace,” said Shefali, a final-year student from Hindu College.
