In a clash between students of two groups belonging to Mewat and Muzaffarnagar in Western UP at Jamia Millia Islamia on Monday, several students were reportedly left injured while heavy police force was deployed to control the situation.
The row erupted after one group attacked another and in retaliation the other group allegedly beat up the students of first group. A student on condition of anonymity said one group called outsiders for help, who entered the campus despite they being not allowed. This only highlights the administration’s laxity, said the student.
As hoodlums ran amok on the campus, some students took shelter in the university mosque. A student requesting not to be quoted said the Proctorial team’s response was tardy as it turned up late to rescue the students holed up in the mosque.
It is understood that the enraged students belonging to Western UP attacked the Mewati students who were being taken to safety in a gypsy of the Proctor’s office.
When contacted university official refused to comment on the issue. A senior police official said the situation has been brought under control.
But the development has left many worried as some fear that Jamia could slip into anarchy if urgent measures are not taken to nip groupism in the bud. Many feel that university may go back to some 20 years ago when violence was rampant until the then Vice Chancellor Lt Gen (retd). Zaki cracked the whip and normalcy was restored.
