A delegation of the Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee (DPCC) led by president Ajay Maken, on Friday, met lieutenant-Governor, Anil Baijal and presented him with a memorandum regarding the plight of the street vendors and their illegal eviction in violation of the 'Street Vendors Act 2014'.
Maken said that they requested the l-G to intervene into this matter in order to save the interest of streets workers.
"This Act aims to protect the livelihood rights and social security of the street vendors and administer the street vending and other activities incidental thereof but despite the indemnity given by the Act the street vendors are still being hassled and illegally ousted by Municipal and Police Authorities on a regular basis. Nearly 15,000 street vendors from 17 different areas of Delhi have been eradicated by the imperious officials in June this year," he said.
He further said that the Act specifies the provision to create a 'Town Vending Committee' (TVC) which shall conduct a survey of all the existing street vendors and issue Certificate of Vending (COV). "No street vendor can be dislodged or relocated till the survey gets completed," he said.
TVCs have not been constituted as the rules pertaining due to the apathy of the Delhi Government.
