Strangers in a strange land?

With Delhi University admissions stuck in limbo, foreign students whose admissions are usually the first to be done are facing ambiguity from all ends. Over 1,300 foreign students had applied to the four-year undergraduate programme (FYUP) this year, but given the unrelenting deadlock between the UGC and the university, a number of applicants may even drop out from the programme resulting in a severe loss of face for the university.

According to sources in the Dean of Foreign Students’ Welfare office, students from various countries have incessantly been calling up the university to know the fate of their admissions. “We have been receiving several calls everyday asking about the issue. There is no answer that the university can give them right now because of the deadlock. The entire process has become ambiguous,” said a source.

Reportedly, a majority of the students just want to know if FYUP will stay or not. The university has been receiving a higher number of applications from abroad ever since FYUP was implemented. Thus, the fear of losing the extra bunch that the university had gained last year is big. A source in the office informed, “Students are only interested in knowing if admissions are under FYUP or not. They don’t care when the admission will start. Many have even said that they would withdraw their applications if the FYUP was rolled back.”

If students from overseas drop the idea of studying in DU altogether, it will affect the university’s reputation abroad severely. DU is considered a world renowned university, but the leading mess has changed the picture.

Dean of Foreign Students’ Welfare, Amrit Kaur Basra, refused to entertain questions on the issue.
