St Stephen’s College elected its new president for the Students’ Union Society (SUS) on Wednesday. The elections, which the college holds independent of the Delhi University, were held on the same day and the results were declared in the evening.

Nikhil M Varghese, a third year BA Programme student, was selected out of the three candidates. The 20-year-old student is a native of Mavelikkara, Kerala, and would be succeeding Mahira, who is a resident of Karnataka.

“Our students’ union has usually taken care of event managements in the college but now we plan to make it more inclusive. I will represent the issues of the students of the college…Already, on the occasion of the Principal Tree — where I get the chance to present the students’ issues, I would raise the issues of accommodation faced by the students living on rental accommodation,” Nikhil told The Pioneer.

The college has a separate electoral system from in which Nikhil secured more than 45 per cent votes, among the three candidates.

All the candidates met the principal of the college, John Varghese. “He asked us to work together for the college because it is not about the winning of one person but the victory of the college,” Nikhil added.

Delhi University Student’s Union elections are also scheduled to be held in September. The DUSU is currently ruled by the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad.
