Infuriated over the rejection of marriage, 23-year-old former Merchant Navy personnel allegedly killed a female Delhi Police constable in South West Delhi’s Sagarpur area. The incident came to light on Monday morning when the employee of a private guesthouse in Janakpuri found the body inside a locked room and informed the police. Preliminary investigation revealed that the accused suspected the victim’s character and was enraged after she refused to marry him despite their engagement in October last year.
Police said that the accused, Mohit, was arrested on Tuesday morning on murder charge. “The body of the deceased, identified as Priyanka Kumari (22), was found inside a room in Neelgagan guesthouse in the area. The girl lived in Sagarpur area with her sisters and was preparing for her competitive exams. She had checked into the guesthouse on Sunday along with Mohit. The room was booked by Mohit and he had introduced Priyanka as his wife,” a senior police officer said.
The victim’s family members told the police that Mohit, a native of Bhiwani in Haryana, and Priyanka were engaged in October last year. “After their engagement, they started meeting, but after some meetings Mohit grew suspicious and started fighting with her. In the meantime, Mohit also lost his job. Although the two were in touch but their relationship looked a remote possibility and a few weeks ago Priyanka rejected him for marriage,” a police officer said, adding that the victim joined the Delhi Police in 2010 and was currently posted at a traffic court in Dwarka. Her four siblings are also in Delhi Police.
Investigation revealed that on Monday morning, when nobody responded from inside the room, guesthouse authorities broke open the door and found the victim lying in bed. They immediately informed the police about the incident and interestingly, the victim’s family members were registering a missing person’s diary at Sagarpur police station. “After registering a case of murder, a team was formed under the supervision of Inspector Richpal Singh Meena and investigators learnt that the CCTV footage showed Mohit leaving the guesthouse on Sunday evening,” the officer added.
During investigation, the police came to know that the family members of the victim had gone to their native place in Jhunjhunu, Rajasthan to celebrate Holi. Around 10 days ago, the accused Mohit had gone to Dwarka court along with his aunt to meet the victim and convince her to marry. “On Sunday evening, the accused Mohit came outside our home and after whipping out a pistol, he threatened the victim with dire consequences if she complained against him. later, the victim came to pacify him and they went to a nearby guesthouse,” the officer added.
