A 30-year-old Delhi Police constable was shot dead when he flagged down a motorbike near a checkpost in Outer Delhi’s Alipur area on Monday night. The constable was on patrol with a Delhi home guard, manning a checkpost near Jhangola village, when the incident took place at 10.50 pm. The policemen reportedly had information about two suspected liquor smugglers in the area.
“The duo noticed two bikers carrying a crate of liquor heading towards the checkpost. When they were signalled to stop, the bikers tried to flee. When Karamveer and the home guard gave them the chase, the pillion rider whipped out a pistol and shot the constable in the chest,” said a senior police official.
Karamveer collapsed on the ground while the assailants fled towards the village. He was rushed to Satyawadi Raja Harish Chandra Hospital in Narela where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Karamveer hailed from Jhunjhunu district of Rajasthan. He was posted at Alipur police station in Outer Delhi. When a police squad went to Jhangola village to weed out the assassins, they were attacked with stones by the villagers. Head constable Joginder Singh suffered head injuries after a stone struck him in the attack. A case of homicide has been registered and raids are being conducted to nab the killers.
