A three-year-old boy was allegedly crushed to death by a speeding Audi Q7 SUV in northwest Delhi's Mukherjee Nagar area, police said on Thursday. The incident that was reported around 7.30 pm on Wednesday sparked protest with local residents blocking the roads.
"Raunak was playing near a traffic intersection close by to his house when the speeding Audi Q7 SUV allegedly crushed him to death," a police official said.
Critically injured Raunak was rushed to Shushruth Trauma Centre, where he was declared brought dead, said officials. Raunak's father Neeraj Kumar is a vegetable vendor.
The driver, identified as Sanjeev (25), was held by locals and handed over to police. He has been booked under Sections 279 (rash driving) and 304A (causing death by negligence), DCP (Northwest) Vijay Singh said.
The car, which was also impounded by police after the incident, belongs to a businessman who lives near Mukherjee Nagar. The driver, however, was the only occupant in the vehicle when the incident took place, the official said. Also, police took the driver for a medical examination and he was not found drunk, the official added.
Police said by the time they reached the spot after receiving a call from someone, Sanjeev had already been badly beaten up and was handed over to police.
The owner of the car has also been summoned.
