Special helpdesks for students with special needs

Students with special needs will now be looked after by the University of Delhi during the admission process as special helpdesks are being set up in each of the 18 centres. The Registrar on Monday released a set of guidelines to all the colleges ensuring that no difficulty is faced by the disabled candidates. Additionally, the Joint Dean of Students Welfare, Malay Neerav said that these differently-abled students going to North campus will be given a bus ferry, free of cost, from the Vishwavidyalaya Metro station to four admission centres, namely Hansraj College, Daulat Ram College, Guru Teg Bahadur Khalsa College and Indraprastha College for Women.

According to the guidelines issued, three per cent seats in all undergraduate courses are reserved for candidates with physical disabilities that are over 40 per cent.

“The three per cent reservation will be allocated on the basis of the category of disability. One per cent will be for persons with low vision or blindness, one per cent for hearing impaired and one per cent for those with locomotor disabilities and cerebral palsy. However if sufficient candidates are not available in a sub-category then candidates from other sub-categories should be considered in their place,” read the guidelines.

Differently-abled students will also find relief online. “The website of the college must have a separate computable link for information regarding admission of students with disabilities and an audio version of the bulletin of information must be made available at least on one computer in the college,” read the guidelines.

While these guidelines have decentralized the admission procedure for students with disabilities, the criterion under which merit will be awarded to these students remains the same as for the rest of the university. Nonetheless, colleges have been asked to prepare a separate cut-off list course-wise and of each disability in order of merit.

The Principals of colleges have been appointed in-charge and have to ensure that these guidelines are followed.

Admission for BMS to change

The University of Delhi on Monday declared that admission to Bachelors with Honours in Management Studies (BMS) programme will be based on both, an entrance examination and the ‘best of four’ percentage.

The university released the guidelines late evening on Monday.

Officials from the Dean of Student Welfare said, “Admission to the BMS programme will now be based on two criterions. Both the criterions will be given 50 per cent weightage each. Fifty per cent weightage will be given to the ‘best of four’ aggregate that the student achieves in Class XII board exams while the other 50 per cent will be given to the marks the student achieves in the entrance examination held by

the colleges.”

The BMS programme is offered only in six colleges in the university, namely Shaheed Sukhdev College of Business Studies, College of Vocational Studies, Keshav Mahavidyalaya, Maharaja Agrasen College, Bhim Rao Ambedkar College and Deen Dayal Upadhyaya College. The number of seats that come under it are 840.
