A special drive against wrong parking and encroachment on the Mehrauli-Gurugram (MG) Road was carried out by the Gurugram Traffic Police, Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) and other agencies on Thursday.

In order to make MG road free of unauthorised parking and encroachments, the Gurugram Traffic Police issued 100 challans on Thursday during the special drive.

Meanwhile, around 30 vehicles were towed away. The drive was carried out between 11 am to 4 pm. Cops said that such intensive drive would continue next 20 days.

Traffic cops fined commuters and motorists caught violating road rules. Most were penalised for illegal parking and wrong driving.

The drive was conducted at MG road and Sohna  after commuters complained of vendors and shops encroaching on public spaces, causing inconvenience and delay.

Earlier traffic police and MCG had carried out a similar drive on Sohna Road soon at the previous month.

Deputy Commissioner of Traffic police, Balbir Singh said, “A joint drive was carried out along with the MCG. We issued around 3000 challans to vehicles parked illegally on road, while encroachments were removed.”

“Illegal parking and encroachment will not be allowed on one of the busiest roads here, caused traffic jams and other problems that caused inconvenience to motorists, while encroachment by vendors created problems for pedestrians.

“We have decided to adopt a policy of zero tolerance for illegal parking and encroachment,” he said.

During the drive the whole operation was covered on video so that the footage can be used as evidence against repeat offenders, a traffic official said.

In a meeting which was held in the last month, the administration had selected the MG Road and Sohna Road as the zero tolerance roads for anti-encroachment drives.
