The Residents’ Welfare Association of Vasant Kunj has launched a project to convert garbage from dhalaos (dumping yards) along with green waste into compost using organic technology.
Finding solution to the problem of piled-up garbage, the compost generated through this process is sold as manure to the farmers.
The idea that was envisioned by a close relative of great freedom fighter Raj Guru has yielded positive results in addressing the garbage menace with 2,400 MT garbage generated in South Delhi — an issue of concern due to shortage of land for the landfill sites.
Taking a cue from the project that is being headed by 95-year-old sister of Raj Guru’s father, South civic body will now replicate the project in all of its 6,400 parks.
Promila Vohra, a family member of the freedom fighter and a local resident of the area, in association with the local RWA on Tuesday launched the project at Shaheed Raj Guru Park and converted nearly 75 per cent garbage from dhalaos into compost along with green waste of the park using technology.
“To execute the process, we have made pits on certain distance in which municipal and green waste are being stored. Once stored, chemicals are being use to convert the solid material into compost. After 10 to 12 days’ cycle, manures are being supplied to farmers and others who can use it. Once executed successfully, it will be replicated in other parks too,” said a representative.
The RWA representative said it is a three-acre park, in which they have converted the green waste and municipal solid waste into compost.
SDMC officials said it will ensure the facility in all its parks as it will help in garbage disposal near their generating points. The Corporation said the move will help in ensuring cleanliness of the area.
“We have decided to replicate the same at other locations. The Corporation along with the local RWAs will work on this project in coming days,” said
Radhe Shayam Sharma, Standing Committee Chairman of SDMC and councillor of the area.
