Soon, parity across the board

In an attempt to do away with the disparity, the Vice-Chancellor Dinesh Singh has come up with a new method which will evaluate students from all boards on par based on the leniency of the respective boards. The method will be implemented from the next admission season where normalisation of boards will be done to ensure that every student gets a fair chance.

Cutoffs released by the university are based on the Class XII results of the year. Thus, as the number of 90 pointers increases so do the cutoffs. According to Singh, the marking has become liberal in boards like CBSE while State boards continue to be stringent while giving marks. “The existing system is very unfair for students because one who has topped in a board may actually not get into any top college in the university. This creates a sort of wall for students below a certain percentage. Thus, we have thought of a new system to beat this issue, which we are planning to implement next year,” Singh said.

The system is expected to remove the disadvantage a student from a strict board faces. Singh explained, “We have in mind the normalisation of all boards. It is a deep technical, mathematical process where we will place students in each board at levels. The toppers of all boards will be considered at the same level, the average students at another level and then the poor students at one level. We will scale it accordingly. This way a topper of the UP board, for example, will be equated at par with the topper of CBSE.”

The process is a time- consuming one as well. However, Singh said that they don’t mind taking it up as it will benefit students. “We have requested boards to equate their marking schemes several times. Students should not suffer because the boards are not equating their marking schemes,” stated Singh.

However, the entire conceptualisation of this process is still underway, he added. “We don’t want to do it in a haphazard manner, thus we will properly conceptualise it and make sure the task force required for it is prepared,” Singh ended.
