Congress President Sonia Gandhi was on Monday evening admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) after she complained of fever and chest pain. The 66-year-old Gandhi was taken to the Cardio-Neuro Centre of AIIMS around 8.30 pm, even as doctors maintained it was nothing ‘serious’.

As a precautionary measure, she was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) where she was examined by a team of four specialists. Sources said top officials of the institute, including its acting director RC Deka, are taking care of her.

Gandhi, who was spearheading the Food Security Bill and sat continuously for nine hours, left the House while voting over the Bill was underway. She was reportedly suffering from fever since Sunday night and also had high blood pressure, complained of suffocation and chest pain following which she was rushed to the hospital by her son Rahul who was also present in the lok Sabha. Rahul, his sister Priyanka and her husband Robert Vadra were in the ICU with Gandhi while  heavy security deployment was made in and around the entire hospital. Doctors said Gandhi was undergoing some tests and kept under observation.

A senior doctor at AIIMS said various blood tests and ECG was conducted on her. Doctors said her ECG report was normal but maintained she would only be discharged after all reports are out. Meanwhile, a battery of senior Congress leaders visited AIIMS to enquire after the health of Gandhi. Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad, Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, senior leaders Renuka Chowdhury, Janardan Dwivedi were some of the leaders who called on her.
