Amid all the bitterness and speculation surrounding people's struggle to cope with the demonetisation, social media is busy making it lighter with “Sonam Gupta bewafa”. The joke on fictitious character 'Sonam Gupta' and her 'disloyalty' is tickling bones of thousands who are otherwise sweating out in queues daily to get access to their very own hard earned money.
Who is Sonam Gupta and from whom the note stating “Sonam Gupta bewafa hai” (Sonam Gupta is unfaithful) came, one doesn't know.
However, the 'heartbreak' has left people in fits of laughter all across the country and changed the gloomy mood that demonetisation had set. Not so coincidentally all the real-life Sonams with surname Gupta have been responding to the joke differently. While some laugh out at it, other Sonams have also faced questions from family that didn't quite get the joke.
First seen written on a Rs10 note around August this year, it has resurfaced again with people posting pictures of the new Rs2,000 note stating the same about Sonam Gupta. Memes and pictures of the same written on different international currency notes are also seen, hilariously calling Sonam Gupta to be 'international bewafa'. It is also likened to the 'beloved' Rs500 and Rs1,000 notes that 'betrayed' their respective owners the moment the Government decided to ban them.
