SOl in a fix over Choice Based Credit System

Published on:

The School of Open learning (SOl) is not implementing the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) in its current academic session despite having 61 per cent of Delhi University’s student strength.

Above 1.5 lakh students are expected to take admission for the under graduate courses this year, but SOl has not decided yet about the implementation of CBCS.

Chandra Shekhar Dubey, the Director, SOl on Tuesday sought to clarify the position on the implementation of the course. “We are not implementing the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) from this year since we have not received any guidelines to implement the course from Distance Education Board (DEB), UGC,” he added.

Currently, SOl is following all academic norms of University of Delhi. The course which is studied by the campus students is similar to the study materials given to SOl students.

Moreover, professors in SOl believe that the pattern of CBCS, that UGC and Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) have developed, is more supportive in the academia pattern of Open learning Institutions.

In the category of Ability Enhancement Elective (Skill Based) paper under the CBCS, students will learn to develop skills while working in the field, which is difficult for a regular student while learning the conventional studies.

“Students are keen to gain practical knowledge rather to spend three years in conventional learning. If CBCS is implemented in the course pattern of SOls, it will give the strength to the existing pattern of open learning institutions,” Dubey added.

Surprisingly, more than 175 students who have scored above 95 per cent marks in class XII have taken admission in SOl, North Campus. Though these students have the option of best colleges of North Campus, but they have opted SOls for practical learning.

“And if CBCS comes in SOls pattern, this will give them much better learning platform because they have much time to go in to the field and acquire knowledge  as compared to the regular students,” said  H C Pokhriyal , SOl, Delhi University.
