Obsession over a girl landed a 23-year-old software engineer of a prestigious college behind bars in the national Capital. Delhi Police on February 16 arrested Aman Singh, a student of Maharaja Surajmal Institute of Technology (MSIT), over charges of allegedly harassing a 20-year-old Delhi University girl by using caller ID spoofing and creating her fake facebook profile.

According to Vijay Kumar, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), West district, the arrested accused, Aman Singh was studying B.Tech from MSIT which is an IP University affiliated college. He had done internships at prestigious companies and was in the process of getting hired by a Multi-National Company.

Aman met a girl, pursuing a diploma course from Delhi University at a festival in 2015 through common friends. The ordeal of the girl began from here as an obsessed Aman started stalking her.

As per the complaint filed by the family member of the girl, Aman had been harassing the girl for nearly one-and-a half years. The harassment started when Aman created a false facebook profile of the girl. From this account, he started sending out requests to her friends and family members. The level of the harassment was such that he made her life a veritable hell so much so that she stopped going to college.

“The accused not only created a false facebook profile of the victim, but also caught hold of the mobile numbers of the family members of the girl and created three whatsapp groups. Each group consisted of the victim’s brothers, sisters and parents. In these groups, he posted explicit pictures and objectionable posts.

“The mental torture grew unbearable for the victim when Aman threatened that if she did not accept his relationship proposal, he will throw acid on her,” said a senior police officer, privy to the case.

Unable to tolerate his constant threats, the victim’s family finally approached the Hari Nagar Police Station.

A team of Cyber cell of West district started tracking the phone numbers through which Aman made calls or sent texts to the victim and her family.

Police said that they have recovered three mobile phones with national and international SIM Cards, an Apple Mac book, one tab and a Dell laptop from his possession.

“Based on the complaint filed by the sister-in-law of the victim, our cyber cell team started analysing his technical movements,” the DCP said.

During the course of investigation, the police team found that Aman was sending filthy messages, texts and photographs on the mobile of the girl and her family through social media and mobile applications. Moreover, to avoid getting identified, Aman made calls from international numbers and was using Internet telephony (VoIP).

Despite analysing his Call Detail Records, the team was unable to gather solid proof against Aman.

Police received a breakthrough in the case when on February 11, the accused took a JIO SIM from his college friend and started sending messages to the girl pretending to be someone else.

“The said number was put on surveillance by the team. After sustained efforts, the culprit was found to be none other but Aman Singh,” said a senior police officer.

On February 16, Aman was arrested from his house in Paschim Vihar area. When the police team reached Aman’s residence, his family feigned ignorance about the whereabouts of the man.

A family member claimed that Aman had gone to Bengaluru for placement interviews but on carrying out a search of the house, Aman was found in his own room.

During interrogation, Aman admitted to his crime. The accused was a brilliant student and displayed all his technical knowledge and skills in misguiding the police.

“Here the parents of Aman too misguided the police team by hiding his exact location but the police team managed to track him down.

“Further investigation is still on,” the DCP added.
