Delhi’s top bureaucrat had a surprise visitor at his residence on Friday night. A wolf snake that measured 110 cm long was spotted at the official residence of Delhi Chief Secretary KK Sharma, creating a panic-like situation.
The snake was rescued by an NGO. DFO North, Delhi Wildlife Department, Gopinath contacted a wildlife NGO who immediately dispatched their rapid response unit to the VIP residence. The Wildlife SOS team searched the premises with flashlights, finally locating the elusive reptile which had taken refuge in a large metal trunk inside the garage within the VIP residence premises.
“The snake was found to be healthy and fit for release and will be set free by NGO in its natural habitat,” Gopinath said.
“Wolf snakes are non-venomous and are commonly found in Delhi. This species is one of the most adaptive species of snakes and feed on geckos and small rodents. They are commonly seen in electric meters and switchboards which are opened infrequently. They are shy snakes but can be aggressive when cornered,” said a co-founder of NGO.
“When dealing with snakes, we have to exercise a lot of caution as people tend to get the snake excited, scared or upset thereby disrupting the rescue operation. This could also endanger our team who is there to remove the snake. Wildlife SOS works round-the-clock to rescue and relocate these misunderstood creatures to maintain public safety and help people coexist with these beautiful animals,” said a co-founder of the NGO.
