A political slugfest erupted on Monday over the death of a woman, whose body was dragged for nearly 12 kilometres under a car after it hit her scooter in outer Delhi, with the AAP and the Congress attacking the BJP over the political affiliation of one of the five arrested accused.
AAP leader staged a protest outside the residence of Lieutenant General VK Saxena and demanded his resignation over the incident of a woman's body being dragged for four kilometers by a car after it hit her scooter. Delhi BJP leaders said the accused should be given the strictest punishment if found guilty and claimed that its rivals were indulging in politics over a sensitive issue.
Retaliating to the charges, the BJP's IT cell in-charge Amit Malviya slammed AAP convener and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, saying he should not be so "helpless" to leave women's safety to hope and escape responsibility. Around 200 party workers and senior AAP leaders including MLAs Atishi, Saurabh Bhardwaj, and Durgesh Pathak, gathered outside at L-G office at Civil Lines and raised slogans against the weak law and order in the national capital and seeking answers over the incident and demanding the Saxena’s resignation.
Security around the L-G's residence has been beefed up with barricades being put up and water canons deployed in the area in case the situation gets out of control.
The AAP also alleged that Mittal is linked to the BJP and also staged a protest at Delhi Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena's residence for being "negligent" in the matter. AAP MLA Saurabh Bhardwaj shared a video with media claiming that a hoarding outside the Sultanpuri Police Station, where the accused is currently lodged, bears the picture of Mittal.
“Currently locked in Sultanpuri Police Station, Predator Manoj Mittal is the local BJP President and Mandal Co-Convenor.
Saxena has turned Delhi Police into a ‘toothless elephant’ as he has weakened the police system to such an extent that policemen could not even stop the car dragging the girl for an hour,” Bhardwaj said.
