Situation under control, say cops

After Wednesday’s demolition drive by the North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NMC) in Delhi’s Jahangirpuri area, four days after the communal clashes in which eight police personnel and a civilian were injured, the Delhi Police said that the situation in the area is normal and under control. However, there was heavy security presence with all senior police officials being present on the spot to avoid any untoward incident.

In the morning, before the demolition drive started, the personnel of Delhi Police, the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and Reserved Armed Force (RAF) in hundreds were deployed in the area. Around 8:30 a.m. the police also carried out a flag march in the area to maintain law and order while the anti-encroachment drive began at around 10.40 a.m..  Dependra Pathak, the Special Commissioner of Police, Law and Order, said that the police in large numbers were there to only provide protection to the civic agency while they carried out the demolition process.

“There was adequate deployment of security forces and we were also in touch with the citizens of the area to maintain peace,” said the Special CP.

Though the demolition process stopped after the Supreme Court’s stay order on it but heavy security forces deployment continued in the area in order to avoid any untoward incident. Police said that drones have also been deployed to monitor the situation.
