Delhi Police is probing a case of impersonation in which a person had created a fake e-mail ID in the name of a sitting judge of the Supreme Court of India and the same was used to send e-mails to various authorities.

E-mails from sitting Supreme Court Judge Dr Dhananjay Y Chadrachud, who is the former Chief Justice of Allahabad High Court, were sent to various authorities including the Prime Minister's Office, complaining against City law College in lucknow regarding harassment of a woman by some boys of the college. When the matter was inquired, it was found that no such e-mail was sent from the Judge's email account.

The matter was brought to the notice of Chief Justice of India, Justice JS Khehar who further directed Police Commissioner Amulya Patnaik to look into the matter. Police Commissioner then asked the Special Commissioner of Police, Intelligence to probe it and the case was handed over to the Special cell.

This comes close on the heels of another case in which Special cell had arrested Tausif Ul-Haq of City law College in lucknow for calling Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister  Aditya Nath Yogi's office impersonating as Justice Kurian Joseph for seeking undue favours.

"An e-mail to different authorities from e-mail-id ahonblemrjusticedychandrachud@gmail.com complaining against City law College in lucknow saying that some boys from the City law College are harassing a girl studying in the college. The e-mail id is in the name of sitting Supreme Court Judge and former Allahabad High Court Chief Justice Dr Dhananjay Y Chadrachud," said a senior police official of the Special Cell.

The official added, "The matter is of sensitive nature as it relates to someone impersonating as a sitting judge of the Supreme Court and misusing his name. The complaint was given to us by RN Nijawan, who is the Registrar of the Supreme Court of India."

The Registrar also asked police for a regular update on the case as the same had to be apprised to the Chief justice of India.

A case in connection to the matter was registered immediately under section 419 (Punishment for cheating by personation) and section 66(D) of the Information Technology Act, 2000 on Saturday last. Sleuths have launched probe to identify the culprit and bring him to face the law, said the official.

The Pioneer had previously reported that Tausif-Ul-Haque, a 22-year-old second year law student, had landed in police net after he called Uttar Pradesh Principal Secretary (law) RN Pandey and introduced himself as Supreme Court judge Justice Kurian Joseph and asked him to appoint his college lecturer as a Government law Officer in the Allahabad High Court.

On his interrogation it was found, Tausif had impersonated as several other higher Government officials and Judicial officers by using the same modus operandi and got undue favours.
