As the news about the murder attempt on BJP MlA Jitender Singh Shunty spread, his party colleagues rushed to his house and held discussions on Wednesday. It has been now revealed that Shunty had sought police protection from the Delhi Police after two attempts were made on his life on earlier occasions.
He had recently met Delhi Police Commissioner BS Bassi with State BJP chief Satish Upadhyay and had handed over an application for providing him security. Following the attack, the Delhi BJP has asked the Delhi Police to review the security of all the MlAs in the national Capital. Meanwhile the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has sought a detailed report from Delhi Police about the incident as the incident has been taken very seriously.
What is interesting is that Shunty was provided security by the Punjab Police and two Personal Security Officers (PSOs) were provided to him. It is yet to be confirmed whether the PSOs reacted when the mysterious intruder gained entry in Shunty's Jhilmil Colony residence in East Delhi. Police was investigating whether strangers were seen in the locality on earlier occasions too. The attack on MlA's life saw senior police officers rushing to his house including Sanjay Beniwal, the Joint Commissioner of Police, Eastern Range.
State BJP president Satish Upadhyay said that it was a serious issue and it is incumbent upon the Delhi Police to provide security to the elected representatives of the city. He said that he will seek an appointment with Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh and will meet the Delhi Police Commissioner too. It should be ensured that there is no laxity in the safety and security of MlAs.
It was not for the first time that Shunty was attacked and miraculously escaped as well. In the year 2007 during the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) elections, Shunty, who fought as an independent candidate, was shot at by unknown assailants. The bullet hit his headgear and he had an astonishing escape. A case with this regard was also registered at Vivek Vihar police station but no arrests have been made till now.
In the year 2009, a tanker tried to mow him down after he made a video clipping about diesel theft in the area. He then escaped the tragedy as well. A case regarding this was registered as well. last year he also received life threatening calls from someone about which he had informed the police as well.
