Meat shops in Gurugram will soon start getting licence to sell meat and other products from Municipal Corporation Gurugram (MCG). The corporation has also received an order from the Haryana Government to develop slaughterhouses outside of the MCG area.
However, the licence guidelines are under process. The MCG will take process fees of the licences from the shop owners and after getting licences they can sell meat in the city. The process will start within a week.
At present in Gurugram the majority of the shops are selling mutton, chicken and fish without licences and even the MCG do not have an actual figure of the number of these shops. As per the official data in two zones of the MCG, there are more than 140 meat shops. But the actual figure of illegal shops is more than this. However, the officials claimed that they had registered the meat shops before the MCG functioning in Gurugram. The Government has also allocated a budget of `55 lakh for the corporation to develop slaughterhouses.
Earlier, an area was designated in Sector 37, but objections were raised by the industrialists and later it was decided that the slaughterhouse would be located outside MCG zone.
The MCG officials are also planning to conduct a survey of all meat shops in the city, and designate spots for them. “We denounce roadside shops, which operate in an unhygienic manner and may also lead to health ailments to citizens,” Sudhir Chauhan, senior town and country planner of the MCG, said.
“We expect that the licence guidelines will be formed soon and the process of issue of licences will start within a week. The shops were functioning earlier and will now be regularised as per the guidelines," Chauhan added.
"The MCG medical officer will also conduct a survey of all meat shops in the city. so that we know how many such shops exist here. We want to provide a suitable place for meat shops," a senior MCG official said.
The move against the illegal shops and slaughterhouse came after some of the Shiv Sena activists forcefully shut meat shops in Gurugram on Wednesday.
