Following the launch of Narendra Modi’s Swachchh Bharat mission, lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung on Thursday performed kar seva at Gurdwara Bangla Sahib in the national Capital. Jung, accompanied by wife Ameena, reached the gurdwara in Central Delhi on Thursday morning and performed seva by polishing shoes of devotees.

“A clean India was the vision of Mahatma Gandhi and the Government has done a symbolic gesture by starting the drive today to make it come true. The cleanliness drive in Delhi is a five-year mission and will go on till 2019,” said Jung.

Calling on various organisations to take up the cause seriously in a sustained way, Jung further said, “I request the Government, municipal bodies, hospitals and the people to make collective effort to keep Delhi clean. let cleanliness become a habit.” Describing polishing shoes as a “humbling experience”, Jung said he wanted to visit the gurdwara since a long time and this is the reason he chose it to launch the campaign.

Jung was also given a tour of the Bangla Sahib’s heritage museum where he interacted with the staff. “My message to public is that India is a secular country and I am happy coming to this place of worship,” he said.

Jung extended his heartiest greetings to Delhiites on the occasion of Dussehra. In his message, he said, “On the joyous occasion of Dussehra, I take great pleasure in extending my good wishes and warm greetings to all my fellow citizens. Dussehra is an occasion when people re-enact the great Ramayana and celebrate the triumph of truth and righteousness over evil. We must draw lessons from our great heritage and pledge ourselves to the path of righteousness and rectitude.”
