After converting abandoned buses into night shelters for homeless, the Delhi Government may use shipping and storage containers for providing temporary shelters to people living on streets.
The transporters, who own containers, on Wednesday met with the concerned officials of the Delhi Government on Wednesday and gave a presentation in this regard.
According to official of the Government, the transporters said that the unique idea struck their mind after seeing reports pertaining to buses being used as night shelters to provide relief to the homeless people especially patients who have came to Delhi for medical treatment. “We have given our proposal before the officials who responded positively. Number of containers and their places will be fixed later,” said a transporter after the meeting with the official.
It would be important to mention that the Delhi Government with the help of NGO Prerna placed two buses near AIIMS Metro station on Saturday for those patients who were forced to sleep in open.
The Government has also provided mattresses and blankets to the patients. Initially they showed lukewarm response but later the buses witnessed 25 to 30 people. Three more buses were placed at several locations this week which saw the rush of homeless people during nights.
