Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde on Monday flagged off 100 new Police Control Room (PCR) vans. The newly inducted vehicles have been fitted with Global Positioning System (GPS) system and will have a mobile phone to enhance the efficiency of the Delhi Police in an emergency situation. It is the largest upgrade in the past 10 years and their aim is to ensure women’s safety in the National Capital which has been under the scanner since the December 16 gang-rape incident. Shinde said, “PCR vans are very important and I had sanctioned the introduction of 370 new PCR vans three months ago. I am happy that it has materialised. I hope the response time is reduced with the induction of these new vehicles.”
Delhi Police Commissioner Neeraj Kumarsaid said the vehicles will be deployed near girls’ schools and colleges, and those roads taken by women to return home after office. The policemen in these vans will carry Glock pistols and MP5 sub-machine guns.
