The gun-firing at Trinagar MlA Anil Bhardwaj’s office created uproar in the Delhi Assembly. Expressing concern over legislators’ security, Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Tuesday said she would communicate sentiments of the House to the Union Home Ministry, to demand better security cover.
“Today’s incident was shocking and regrettable. Nobody expected that an MlA would be attacked in broad daylight. It’s a cause for concern for all of us,” she said while replying to a debate on deteriorating law and order situation in the city.
She said it was a matter of concern that there was no sense of security among women who are afraid of the body (Police) which was formed to protect all citizens including elected representatives. During the debate, Delhi Police Commissioner remained present in the officers’ gallery.
Cutting across party lines, the House condemned the incident. Some heated arguments broke out between Dikshit and leader of the Opposition in the House, VK Malhotra, when the latter objected to the CM’s remark on violence that broke out during the recently-concluded Delhi Gurdwara elections.
“We must learn a lesson from the incident. The House exhorts the Delhi Police Commissioner and the Union Home Ministry to take serious steps”, Dikshit said. later, while talking to reporters, she accused BJP of politicising the issue. “It is bad that BJP was trying to politicise such a grave issue.”
