Sewa Kutir breakout: 18 juveniles still at large

Published on:

A day after 33 juveniles escaped from the reformation home, Sewa Kutir in Kingsway Camp, 18 are still on the run.

Fifteen were nabbed later by police. Investigations reveal that five juveniles, recently transferred from another correctional facility at Majnu ka Tila on September 8, had planned the daring breakout.

On Saturday evening, 33 juveniles went on the rampage at the correctional home. The vandalism lasted nearly eight hours from Saturday evening to Sunday morning.

They burnt gas cylinders, the superintendent’s office, medical room and entry gates, pillaged `40,000 from the cash till and pelted stones at police and security personnel. Some of the residents of the same home had escaped a few weeks ago and are said to be habitual offenders.

Preliminary investigation suggests that the juveniles turned violent after their demand for drugs was turned down by the observation centre. Oddly, the administration of Sewa Kutir did not allow police to control the juveniles running riot since Saturday evening.

A senior police officer said that the 15 detained inmates, who escaped from the juvenile home, told Councillors that the entire conspiracy was hatched by five juveniles who bullied others into submission.

“After the fiasco, 18 residents are still absconding. District police and other specialised units are on alert to nab the guilty,” the officer added.Meanwhile, the administration department of Sewa Kutir has written a letter to Delhi Police on Monday night giving details about the incident.
