DMRC takes it to another level with bilevel platforms

Faced with acute space crunch and ever-increasing cost of construction, the Delhi Metro has, for the first time, constructed a double-decker platform in the ongoing Phase III project that will also take care of the needs of the upcoming Phase IV project. The elevated Badli Mor Metro station, part of the extension of line 2 (Jahangirpuri-HUDA City Centre corridor), will have two platforms built on top of each other. With this, the station will be turned into one of the largest interchange Metro stations once it becomes functional in the year 2021 as a part of the Phase IV project.

Once operational, as a part of the Phase IV project, the interchange station is expected to benefit areas like Mukundpur, Reola Khanpur, Palam, Najafgarh and Narela which currently lack connectivity as even the number of buses plying in the region are limited. “The Badli Mor station, on the Jahangirpuri-Samaypur Badli Metro corridor (extension of the Yellow line) has been designed in such a way that the station structure will have provision for expansion in Phase IV as well. For the first time in India, Metro platforms have been constructed one over the other. Until the Phase IV project is not kicked off, the upper platform will act as a roof for the one below. However, we will construct the basic structure of the top-most platform now itself,” said Jitendra Tyagi, Director (Works), Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC).

This feature in the Metro network is found in several parts of the world like Taiwan, Beijing, Singapore and Hong Kong. The station, which was earlier proposed to be named Shalimar Place, is expected to register a ridership of about 7,000 commuters in 2016 — when Delhi Metro’s Phase III stations will start operations.
