Taking stride to develop interest in sports among children by turning its four major stadiums more conducive, South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) will sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Sports Authority of India (SAI) in this regard.

According to a senior SDMC official, the SAI will depute a team of experts to study the present status of the stadiums. “A report will be prepared on the basis of the study and development work will be taken up thereafter,” he said.

Standing Committee Chairman Bhupender Gupta said that the SAI will lay suitable grass for the different games and racing track and provide other advanced equipment. “This will go a long way in developing interest in sports among the students,” Gupta added.

The decision was taken after Mayor Kamaljeet Sehrawat, Bhupender Gupta, and leader of House Shikha Rai called on the Union Sports Minister Rajyavardhan Rathor on Tuesday.

“We have told the Union Minister that SDMC has been inculcating the interest of sports among the children in order to nurture them to compete in State or national level games. This step is taken in this direction,” he said.

Gupta also said that grounds with an area of around one acre will also be suitably developed to encourage students in traditional games like wrestling and kabaddi.

“The Minister, in the meeting said that SAI can provide its expertise for this purpose. After that, it was decided to upgrade four stadium -- Madipur, Harinagar, Kakrola and Delhi Gate falls under SDMC's jurisdiction,” the official said.
