South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) for generating 27.5 MW power from two separate solar plants on Friday.
The solar plant would be installed at vacant land of the SDMC at Ghummenhera near Najafgarh and at Faridabad in Haryana. The work on the two plants is likely to begin in the first half of April 2019, a senior SDMC official said.
The official said the MoU was signed in continuation with Government of India’s initiative on green energy concept and solar initiative of SDMC.
SDMC Mayor Narendra Chawla said that two sites have been identified at Ghumenhera and Ferozpur Village for installing plant. At Ghumenhera 105 acre and Ferozpur 9.45 acre is available that would be use for the purpose.
Chawla said after a detailed study the estimated solar energy plant of capacity 25 MWp and 2.5 MWp have been planned for Ghumenhera and the Ferozpur. The two plants are expected to be commissioned in 18 months after the start of work.
He further said that with commissioning of the two plants SDMC will be able to substantially mitigate pollution as the emission of 28 000 ton Co2 per annum will be reduced. “The plants are going to be milestones in the direction of environmental protection,” he added.
The official said that the estimated cost for the project at Ghumenhera and Ferozpur are Rs 145 crore and Rs 20 crore respectively. The funds for this project will be generated through public bonds and action for this has already been initiated.
The Chairperson Standing Committee Shikha Rai said that the units of solar energy generated from the above plants are three crore at Ghumenhera and 30 lakh from Ferozpur.
Rai said that the power generated from the Ghumenhera will be utilized against the street light bills consumed by SDMC. She also said that the civic body will save Rs 22.5 crore per annum from the Ghumenhera project and earn Rs 1.55 crore from exporting energy generated by Ferozepur plant.
