SDMC starts 22 green waste management centres

South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) has commissioned 22 green waste management centres across its zones in order to make its entire areas green waste free. The centres are expected to curb air pollution and encourage scientific disposal of waste.

Shailender Singh Monti, Chairman of Standing Committee, SDMC said, “These centres would ease the load on landfill sites.”At present, green wastes are collected from colonies and are dumped at a landfill site. Several vehicles were engaged in collecting the waste and dumped it at landfill site. Now, there is no need for trucks to make rounds of this landfill site, reducing the cost of diesel and help in curbing pollution”.

“SDMC has made 19 wood chipper machines operational in all four zones for recycling the green waste. The machines produce shredder powder which is fit to be used to make manure and reuse it in the parks and other trees; further the remaining powder can be spread around boundaries of the park to make the area fertile,” he said.

“People generally dump green waste at dhalaos. We will ensure that green waste collected by the residents is treated at our facilities. If the residents continue to dump green waste at dhalaos, the purpose of setting up these centres will go in vain so we are requesting all the residents to cooperate. The compost will be used for development of parks and maintenance of trees, it is useful in the expansion of the greenery,” he added.

“Earlier seven chipper machines were installed in Green Park Colony under the South Zones; the experiment proved to be successful, prompted the SDMC to install such machines in all the four zones, hence taking its number from seven to 19. It is necessary to bring entire green waste to these management and collection centres and to avoid dumping here and there to make it a waste,” said a senior SDMC official.

SDMC has procured 19 shredders as of now to treat green waste and the official said that they had called tender to procure more machineries.

“SDMC areas generate 20-25 metric tonnes of green waste on a daily basis and around 2,700MT of municipal solid waste. We will procure 10 more shredders and then depending on the demand, we will get more machinery. “This is an attempt to make south and parts of west Delhi free from green waste. The practice of open burning of dry leaves will stop very soon. The move will bring down the pollution level, even if by a slight margin,” he maintained.

Garbage collected at these compactors will be taken to the landfill site on a daily basis, making our area free from solid and green waste,” the standing committee chief added.
